The Goal of the Royal Society of New Zealand Canterbury Branch is to advance and promote science and technology in the Canterbury region. To this end we organise regular monthly meetings with guest speakers. We provide travel grants to young scientists to attend conferences, and support science projects in Canterbury.
We began in 1862 as the Philosophical Society of Canterbury. We are formally a committee of the Royal Society of New Zealand and although we are a branch by name and are governed by the statutes governing the Royal Society of New Zealand, membership of the branch and its activities are separate from membership of the national body. We were formally incorporated in our own right in 2002.
The council is elected annually at the Annual General Meeting in March, according to the constitution to administer the affairs of the branch.
The branch has nominated representation on the following boards:
Canterbury Museum Trust Board
Riccarton Bush Board of Trustees
RS Allan Memorial Trust Board
Public Lecture Programme and Events
We organise monthly lectures with guest speakers. Our programme is organised at the beginning of the year but is often updated as we often take the opportunity to have visiting scientists address us. The abstract and Speaker's biography for the monthly meeting is usually available before the meeting.
We provide travel grants to postgraduate students to attend conferences, and grants to support science projects in Canterbury. These are funded from bequests and donations administered by the branch.
We have a membership of arount 200, from all areas of science and technology and the general public. Membership is open to anyone with an interest in science and technology. Although many members do work in science fields, a professional science qualification is not necessary. You can join us by filling out and returning the membership application form.
Mail Distribution List
Courtesy of the RSNZ head office we run an Email distribution list of notices of meetings and similar events of a scientific interest. You can join the list and find out how to send your meeting notice out on it from the Lists Page.
